The last Australian-made Ford Falcon has rolled off the assembly line this morning, marking the end of Ford’s 91-year history of car-manufacturing in the country.
Ford is the first of the big three car makers to close its Australian doors. GM Holden and Toyota Australia is expected to replicate the move next year.
About 400 workers at the company’s factory in Melbourne’s north and 200 at its Geelong plant are losing their jobs.
Ford has been manufacturing in Australia since 1925, starting in Geelong. The Broadmeadows factory opened 34 years later. Falcon production began in 1960.
More than 3.8 million Ford Falcons have been made in Australia over 56 years.
