A man in the US state of Virginia accused of killing his estranged wife on Valentine’s Day has been charged with second degree murder.

Joseph Vincent Merlino, 29, was arrested on Thursday in connection to the death of 35-year-old Ellie Mizon Tran.

Local Police said Tran died in hospital after she was attacked in the driveway of her home in Virginia Beach.

There have been no additional details about the incident.

Virginian-Pilot cited a source as saying Tran lived in the United States for several years and worked as a nail technician.

According to the newpaper, Merlino’s bail determination sheet said he had no prior criminal record, although online court records showed that he has faced past charges for residential code violations, traffic offenses and one disturbing the peace charge.

Merlino’s hearing in General District Court on Friday was postponed after prosecutors said the case should have been filed in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court because of the relationship between Merlino and Tran.

Tran’s mother, Oanh Le, told WTKR that her daughter provided for the entire family, including her 2-year-old daughter and her elderly parents.

Mrs Le added that she was concerned because she and her husband do not speak English and want to provide the best for their granddaughter.

Merlino is currently being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correction Centre.
