There will be no ANZAC day ceremony at the Long Tan memorial in Vietnam this year, after the Vietnamese government cancelled last year’s 50th anniversary plans last minute.
Australia’s department of foreign affairs and trade updated travel advice on the Smart Traveller website warning travellers about ANZAC day plans.
According to DFAT, the Australian Government cannot commit to holding an official commemoration on ANZAC day due to the unclear nature of whether Vietnamese authorities will permit the event.
Vietnam abruptly cancelled last year’s 50th anniversary event the day before it was scheduled.
There was no clear reason given, but it’s believed the event had offended the communist government.
The battle of Long Tan is still a sensitive topic for Vietnam.
The battle took place in 1966, when a hundred ANZAC soldiers fought an estimated 2,500 Viet Cong soldiers at a rubber plantation.
