Phuc Thien Tang, 49, appeared before an out-of-sessions hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday night, charged with the murder of 44-year-old Hoa Thi Huynh.
According to local media, the pair had been squatting inside an unoccupied View St home in the weeks before Ms Huynh’s death.
Her body was discovered on September 10.
Based on an autopsy, police believe Ms. Huynh had been killed three days earlier after allegedly being struck to the head with an object.
“It appears she died of blunt-force trauma,” Detective Leading Senior Constable Rob Blezzard told the court, The Age reported.
It’s alleged Mr Tang attempted to withdraw funds from Ms Huynh’s bank account shortly after her death.
He was arrested on a street in Richmond on Wednesday and has made full admissions to killing Ms Huynh, according to the detective.
