New South Wales police are investigating an incident in which a man was shot and killed in a ‘targeted attack’ in Sydney’s west.

Vietnamese-born lawyer Ho Ledinh, 65, was shot three times several times outside the Happy Cup cafe in Bankstown’s Old Town Plaza on Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the attacker fled on foot, with police confirming the last sighting of the suspect as Stewart Lane in Bankstown, behind the Bankstown City Plaza.

“We will hunt you down,” Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Scott Cook told the killer in a live press conference.

“We’re confident the shooting was targeted, it was not random.”

Det Sup Int Cook added that one of the major lines of inquiry into the motive behind the daylight murder was Mr Ledinh’s occupation as a lawyer who defended many criminals.

“He was a criminal solicitor, in the sense that that was his business to practice…He has a lot of clients who are engaged in organised crime and other offences so that is absolutely a line of inquiry in terms of his business.”

It’s reported that Mr Ledinh may have sent his wife and children back to his home country of Vietnam just weeks before the shooting.

The father-of-three was well known in Sydney’s tight-knit Vietnamese community.

Meanwhile, police have launched a massive manhunt for the gunman, who fled the scene in a getaway car after shooting Mr Ledinh.

They have described the shooter as Pacific Islander in appearance, with an olive complexion and of medium build.

CCTV footage from a business nearby showed the alleged killer wearing a baseball cap and fluorescent shirt with a dull green jacket over the top.
