A man in the United States has admitted to lying about being a prisoner of war in Vietnam, in order to receive gifts.

67-year-old Robert Guidi of New Jersey state, pleaded guilty to theft by deception and violating the state’s Stolen Valor Act.

The Morris Country Courthouse heard that Guidi received a $40,000 dollar deck built at his home.

He also received close to $4000 dollars from someone by pretending to be a Purple Heart recipient who needed medical aid.

Guidi told people he served as a Green Beret and trained sniper, but he in fact only served a clerical position in the army during the Vietnam War.

He had never been wounded or a Prisoner of War as he had falsely claimed in the past.

Prosecutors recommended that Guidi be sentence to three years in prison.

He will be sentenced in May.
