Customs officials have confiscated 50 kilograms of rhino horns at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, state media reported Friday.

The shipment was found in a suitcase onboard a Kenya Airways flight upon its arrival in Hanoi on Thursday. It reportedly included nine large horns with one weighing over seven kilograms.

There was no receiver’s name or recipient on the suitcase.

An unnamed customs official told state-run Vietnam News Agency, that the horns were likely from endangered black rhinos poached in Africa and then smuggled to the Vietnamese market.

According to local media, the rhino horns have an estimated street value worth over VND20 billion (over $A1.2 million).

Although the sale and purchase of rhino horn is strictly banned in Vietnam, the southeast Asian country remains one of the world’s largest consumers of the critically-endangered animal.
