Vietnamese police have arrested six people involved in a $13 million online gambling ring.

According to Hanoi police’s official newspaper, the gang was arrested for setting up a betting website in 2015, which had amassed $13 million worth of transactions.

Aside from state-run lotteries and a number of foreigner-only casinos, gambling is illegal in the country.

But the practice is still rife, especially in the run-up to major sporting events, where punters place bets online, or seek out illegal gambling dens.

Under Vietnamese law, the gang face up to 10 years in jail.

Their gambling website allowed punters to place bets on sports matches, as well as online casino games and the lottery.
