A Miss World Australia finalist has died in hospital after being involved in a car crash in far north Queensland.
17-year-old Elyse Miller-Kennedy suffered extensive injuries following a head-on collision on August 3 that left her trapped in the car for two hours.
She was airlifted to a Cairns hospital in a critical condition before being flown to a specialist unit in Townsville.
Family friend Katrina Porter announced the news on behalf of the family online.
“We are absolutely devastated to announce Elyse Miller-Kennedy passed away yesterday afternoon at Townsville Hospital Intensive Care Unit, surrounded by beloved family and friends after losing her week long battle to live after a tragic head on collision on Wednesday 3rd August 2016,” Ms Porter said.
The teenager gained her licence just five weeks before the crash.
Police believe she was hit by French tourists who were driving on the wrong side of the road.
Police continue to investigate whether a man and woman from France, who were in the other car, may have been on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.
