Sydney shopkeeper Adeel Ahmad Khan has been found guilty of the manslaughter over the deaths of a mother and her baby son following an explosion at his Rozelle shop in 2014.
Last Friday, 46-year-old Khan was found guilty of murdering resident Chris Noble who lived above his shop.
Today, a NSW Supreme Court jury found Khan not guilty of murdering 31-year-old Bianka O’Brien and her 11-month-old son Jude but convicted the former shopkeeper of their manslaughter.
Ms O’Brien and her son also lived above Khan’s shop and died in the September 2014 blaze.
Khan was charged with three counts of murder over the deaths, but had pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
Prosecutors alleged Khan planned to destroy the shop because he had debts of almost $400,000 and had not been able to sell the badly performing business.
But the married father of three denied he started the fire. He told the jury three armed robbers broke into his store, tied him up and set the fire.
The Supreme Court was shown CCTV footage of Khan buying 38 litres of petrol from a BP service station in Croydon Park two days before the blaze.
He was buried under debris in the explosion, and told emergency workers who rescued him that he was sorry.
A face mask was found in his pocket.
The jury retired on June 2 after a three-week trial.
