At least one person has died with six people seriously injured after a petrol tanker rolled on the Calder Freeway in Melbourne this morning.

It’s believed the truck, carrying 600 litres of diesel and 20,000 litres of unleaded petrol, rolled over and smashed into about ten cars on the freeway near Green Gully Road, Keilor Park, about 8.40am.

Ambulance Victoria has confirmed six people have been injured. A woman in her 40s, whose car overturned, has been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with neck, shoulder and arm injuries. The truck driver has also been taken to that hospital with leg injuries.

Emergency crews are on the scene, working to free the crushed car.

Victoria Police said the cause the collision has yet to be determined but detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating.

The Calder Freeway has been closed in both directions between the Western Ring Road and Tullamarine Freeway while VicRoads expects it will remain closed “well into this afternoon”.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area though the Tullamarine Freeway has been suggested as the best alternate route.
