LONDON – British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that he will step down by October after Britons voted in a referendum to leave the European Union.
“I think the country requires fresh leadership,” he told reporters outside his Downing Street office.
“I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.
“There is no need for a precise timetable. I will continue in post for the next three months.”
Mr Cameron also added that he had already spoken to the Queen about his decision.
The prime minister campaigned to remain in the EU but the British public rejected, voting 52 percent to 48 percent in favour of quitting the bloc.
