MELBOURNE – Firefighters have contained a blaze to a roof of Victoria’s oldest Greek Orthodox church in East Melbourne.

The Holy Church of ‘The Annunciation of Our Lady’ is the third church fire following Orthodox Easter services on Sunday night.

Fire crews were called to the building on the corner of Victoria Parade and Lansdowne Street after the fire reportedly began around 1.30pm.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s assistant chief fire officer Marty Braid said no one was inside at the time.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

On Sunday night, blazes engulfed a Macedonian Orthodox church in Sydney and a Serbian Orthodox church in New York.
