Counter-terror police have arrested a man in Melbourne’s northwest.

The arrest is believed to be related to five men who allegedly tried to leave Australia to join Islamic State in Syria.

In a statement, the Australian Federal Police said: “The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) can confirm it conducted operational activity in northwestern Melbourne today”.

“A man has been arrested, and is currently assisting police with inquiries,’’ it said.

“This activity is not related to a current or impending threat to the community.

“As this activity remains ongoing, it is not appropriate to provide further comment.”

Similar raids were conducted on homes in Melbourne’s north and northwest on May 17, linked to the five now before the courts accused of trying to flee to Syria to fight with the self-declared Islamic State militant group.

Islamic preacher Musa Cerantonio, Shayden Thorne, Kadir Kaya, Antonio Granata and Paul Dacre were arrested on May 10 after towing a seven-metre motor boat almost 3,000 km from Melbourne to Cairns in the northern state of Queensland.

They were later charged with making preparations for incursions into foreign countries to engage in hostile activities.
