MELBOURNE – Homicide Squad detectives have charged the mother of 14-month-old Sanaya Shahib, whose body was found in a creek in Heidelberg West in Melbourne.

Sofina Nikat, 22, was arrested in Mont Albert yesterday morning and faced an out-of-sessions court hearing at the West Melbourne police station at 6pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said the accused Mitcham woman made a “full confession” to the murder of her daughter, which is alleged to have occurred on Saturday, April 9.

Victoria Police confirmed Ms Nikat has been charged with one count of murder and will face an out of session’s court hearing at the 313 Spencer Street Police Complex today.

Investigators are no longer looking for anyone else in relation to this investigation.
