A body has been found in northern Tasmania, believed to be that of Peter Watson, who was swept away in floodwaters more than a fortnight ago.

In a statement issued this afternoon, police said search crews recovered the body in the South Esk River at Evandale near Launceston.

Mr Watson’s, 63, was swept away by the rising floodwater on June 7. His partner, who was with him at the time, was airlifted to safety.

“While this is a very sad time for Mr Watson’s family and loved ones, we hope this will provide them with some closure,” police acting Inspector Phil Summers said in a statement.

“The 15-day search involved Search and Rescue personnel in the water and on the ground, Search and Rescue dogs, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, SES volunteers, and police officers from the Deloraine Division working tirelessly alongside Mr Watson’s family and volunteers.

“Our thoughts are with Mr Watson’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

The search continues for another man, Trevor Foster, who was also swept away in the floodwaters on June 6 from his home in Ouse.

Inspector Matthew said police had yet to find any sign of the 81-year-old.

“We understand how important it is to return the missing person to his family, to provide them with some closure, and despite our considerable efforts we have not been successful so far,” he was quoted as saying by the ABC.
