Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been taken to hospital for observation after a fall in a race at Mildura on Monday.
Payne was initially treated at the Mildura Base Hospital but later flown to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after she complained of abdominal pain.
The 30-year old fell off her brother Patrick Payne’s horse Dutch Courage during the seventh race and was immediately attended to by medics, who opted to take her to hospital for further observation.
Racing Victoria stated on Twitter, “Michelle Payne was conscious and had movement of her arms and legs, complaining of abdominal pain.”
Payne had earlier ridden a winning double for her brother.
She became the first woman to ride to Melbourne Cup victory in 2015, on the Darren Weir-trained Prince of Penzance.
