A Somali refugee who set herself alight at an Australian detention centre on the Pacific island nation of Nauru has arrived in Australia for treatment.
It comes three days after an Iranian refugee died of injuries sustained in a similar apparent protest over Australia’s strict asylum seeker policies.
21-year-old Hodan Yasin was flown 4,500 kilometres from Nauru to the Australian city of Brisbane this morning, and taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
She suffered critical injuries on Monday, and was treated at the Nauru hospital by Australian doctors.
A 23-year-old Iranian refugee, Omid Masoumali, set himself on fire last Wednesday in the presence of representatives from the United Nations.
He died on Friday after being sent to Australia for treatment.
