Australian officials are trying to confirm reports an Australian female humanitarian worker has been abducted in Afghanistan.
According to media reports, 60-year-old Katherine Jane Wilson, was taken by a group of armed men in military-style uniforms from her office in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Thursday morning.
It is not known who is responsible or whether a ransom has been sought for her release.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement Thursday evening that the Australian government was working to confirm the reported kidnapping.
Ms Wilson was reported as previously having worked with the Danish Committee for Aid to Refugees, or DACAAR, a developmental aid organisation working in Afghanistan since 1984.
However, the organisation has since rejected claims the victim was one of their staff.
“We wish to make clear that the person in question does not work for Dacaar or DRC,” the agency tweeted overnight.
“No one from DRC or Dacaar has been abducted in Afghanistan.”
Jalalabad is close to the border with Pakistan, in a region where militant groups are known to operate.
Abductions – particularly for ransom – are common in Afghanistan, with human aid organisation workers often targeted.
