The 29-year-old surfer who was attacked by a great white shark at a Western Australian beach earlier this week has died in hospital.

Ben Gerring lost his leg above the knee in a shark attack while surfing at Gearies Beach near Mandurah, south of Perth, on Tuesday afternoon.

He was flown to Royal Perth Hospital where he remained in a critical condition.

Mr Gerring died on Friday night with his family by his side.
