MELBOURNE – Dual Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond has been arrested for drink driving and charged with firearms offences.

Shooting Australia have said they are ‘working closely’ with the 44-year-old shooting champion in relation to the charges over the weekend.

The organisation will release a statement this afternoon saying it will attempt to ensure Diamond’s “welfare is protected”.

“We are also communicating regularly with the Australian Olympic Committee and our other stakeholders, and we will continue to do so,” Shooting Australia said in a statement earlier today.

Diamond was allegedly charged with high-range drink driving and illegally carrying a gun in his car near a house in Nelson Bay on Saturday night.

His driver’s and firearms licenses had been suspended and he had been granted bail to appear at court on June 7, police said in a statement, adding that he had been involved in a domestic argument with a relative.

Police said a breath analysis later showed he was three times over the legal limit.

Police also searched Diamond’s vehicle and allegedly found a shotgun and 150 rounds of ammunition.

Diamond’s trap shooting hopes for competing in the upcoming Rio Olympics are now in doubt, however Shooting Australia is yet to make a comment on the matter.

Diamond won trap gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, defended his title at Sydney four years later and is hoping to compete at a seventh Olympics in Rio.
