A young man has died in a suicide bombing on a street in Buon Ma Thuot City, in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.

The 30-year-old victim, who has been identified as Nguyen Van Minh, was a father of two and a resident in Buon Triet Commune, Lak District, Dak Lak.

He reportedly detonated a homemade grenade at an intersection in Tan An Ward around 10pm (local time) on Sunday.

State media reported the cause of the suicide was a conflict with his wife. He was madly in love with her and did not like her going to work in the city.

According to Tuoi Tre newspaper, witnesses said Minh was leaving a nearby hotel minutes before the explosion. He shouted “grenade” and threw a can-shaped object onto the street.

The object did not blast, but did create panic among the crowd at the three-way crossroad.

Minh then allegedly picked up the grenade and threw it on a truck lane where a lorry drove by, running over the grenade and causing a huge explosion.

According to the Dak Lak Province police, their deputy director Pham Minh Thang was injured in the blast as he attempted to calm Minh down. A security guard at a nearby company was seriously injured.

The lorry, however, suffered no damage except a puncture.

Police are continuing the investigation.
