Retail giant Target has confirmed it will be moving its Geelong headquarters, with between 130 and 180 jobs set to be cut.
The operations’ regional head office employs 900 people. Remaining jobs will be moved to a new headquarter in Melbourne’s west in the next year, the ABC reported.
The move ends Target’s 90-year association with Geelong.
In a statement, Geelong’s mayor Darryn Lyons said he was “deeply disappointed and disheartened” at the news.
“Target has been part of the fabric and tradition of Geelong since 1925, when founder George Lindsay opened his first store here,” he said.
“I understand this is a business decision, but that does not make it any easier for our region.
“Most importantly, my thoughts are with the many hundreds of Target employees and their families who will be impacted by this decision.
In 2013, the company cut 260 jobs at Geelong following a restructure.
The latest move will deal another blow to the region, following the recent exit of Ford and Alcoa.
